The fluoridation of public drinking water has been a recent topic of discussion in the news.  On September 24, 2024, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California directing the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take action regarding the fluoridation of public drinking water.  The Court’s ruling did not determine the benefits or consequences of fluoridation, but does require the EPA to take action.

The Court’s ruling has caused concern within the general public and Augusta Water wants to reassure everyone we remain committed to providing safe drinking water to all of our customers.  We meet this commitment in two ways.  First, Augusta Water continues to follow all guidance and recommendations from the EPA and the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) for fluoridation and remains in compliance with applicable limits.  Second, Augusta Water staff are closely following the discussion around fluoride and monitoring the ongoing research around fluoride in public drinking water.  As updated guidance is provided, Augusta Water will make any necessary changes to remain in compliance with EPA and VDH standards.

On average, Augusta Water provides customers with drinking water containing fluoride between 0.7 and 0.8 parts per million (ppm).
